Read more to learn how I raised my guaranteed income by thousands of dollars in just a few short months and learn how I was inspired to start this blog. You may even be inspired to start your own website or to pursue your passions!
First, a little about me. I’m creative. I’ve always loved photography, design, and writing. Being creative is essential to my being. It’s what I was born to do. As a young child I enjoyed art classes, was on the yearbook staff, and competed in school art competitions. I went to college and studied Studio Art. After I earned my Bachelor of Fine Arts, I enrolled at Savannah College Art and Design and earned my Masters in Photography. I’ve worked as an intern, an assistant, and finally as a product photographer. I truly was living my dream. Goal accomplished!
Being creative is essential to my being. It’s what I was born to do.
But then things changed… or I guess they stayed the same? I had landed my dream job almost 4 years ago but something wasn’t right. I was no longer growing professionally. I wasn’t being challenged. No one even respected or acknowledged my work or craft. My creativity was dying a slow, sad death. And I was too young for that.
One day shortly after a rather lackluster meeting at work I decided that I wasn’t ready to peak in my career at the age of only 33. I actively decided to be better. To not quit. To keep growing. I made the decision to change.
My creativity was dying a slow, sad death. And I was too young for that.
I started by organizing all of my talents into one solid idea and I worked to make that idea tangible. I worked relentlessly to bring it all together.
The first thing I did was write out everything I am great at professionally. Then I listed out my hobbies and passions. Then I considered what I didn’t know but wanted to learn.
Professional: Photography, Marketing, Design, Social Media
Hobbies: Travel, Writing, Living Small, Decorating
Wanted to Learn: HTML, WordPress, Twitter, SEO
I then started thinking bigger than each individual thing I am good at. I started thinking big picture! What did I want to invest my time in to?
Ideas: Real Estate, Building Websites, Freelancing, Blogging
I decided that I wasn’t ready for a major career change and I didn’t want to go back to freelancing. I wanted to build a blog. I thought that it would be beneficial to my career to learn WordPress and HTML coding. I also knew that having a strong visual portfolio of my work (photography, design, and writing) would come in handy while job hunting and interviewing. I wanted to build something that would be fun and profitable to continue working on for a long time, even after I had a new job.
I started thinking about what I wanted my blog to be about and how I wanted to share my passions with readers. This part was easy for me as I love travel, food, my home, style, and finances. I then built my brand including the blog’s name, style guide, logos, and more. After deciding on a name I registered the name on WordPress, email, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Amazon, and Etsy.
Now that my idea was born I was ready to learn! I started learning basic HTML coding to build my blog posts. Once I had a few blog posts I started learning how to imbed affiliate links to earn money and how to imbed Instagram images to drive traffic to my account and keep WordPress storage down.
I wanted to build something that would be fun and profitable to continue working on for a long time, even after I had a new job.
Once my blog was up and running and had a professional look and feel, I started to job hunt. I used my blog as an example of my abilities and talents to land a new job.
So how did I earn $30K in just 3 months?
The answer is amazingly simple! I guaranteed my annual income to be $30K more than my previous income with these simple revenue generating points:
- Advertising – I sell advertising space on my blog.
- Affiliate Links – I make money from affiliate marketing with Amazon and Target.
- Sponsored Posts – I make money writing for others and by driving traffic to their sites.
- Review Posts – I make money writing reviews for local businesses now.
- Etsy – I sell items I make on Etsy.
- I got a new job! – My new blog helped me land a new 9-5.
I hope my story has inspired you to start your own business or blog and to pursue your passions! You can do it. You know you can!
